links and expiry
how long a link lasts, what happens after, and what a link page shows.
on this page
lifetimes#
| plan | choices | default |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 1 day (24 hours) | 1 day |
| Pro | 1, 7 or 30 days | 7 days |
| Max | 1, 7, 30 days or never | 7 days |
set it in the drawer (settings → links expire after; it only lists what your plan allows) or per link with el share --expires 1d|7d|30d|never. asking for a lifetime your plan doesn't include fails before anything is uploaded.
after a link expires#
the page says the snapshot has expired and its files are deleted from the server. an agent fetching it gets an http 410. an expired link can't be brought back; share the element again for a new one.
changing plans doesn't touch existing links: they keep the expiry they were made with.
deleting#
on Pro and Max, delete a link from saves (hover the row → ⋯ → delete link). it stops working at once, for everyone, and shows that it was deleted. on Free, links run out after 24 hours.
previews and embeds#
pasted into slack, discord, a pull request or an issue, a link unfurls with the element's screenshot and title. the page itself shows the element at its real size, live: hover states, fonts and layout work, with a copy link button.
link pages are marked noindex, so search engines don't list them.
a private link unfurls as just "private link", with no title or screenshot, and its embed shows "this snapshot is private" unless the viewer opens it signed in with access. switching a link to private stops new previews at once; a chat app may keep a preview it already made.
